The Physalis is characterized by the unique packaging of each individual fruit. The light brown, lantern-like shell (the enlarged flower calyx) contains a cherry-sized fruit inside. The greenish-yellow to bright yellow, juicy berries are pleasantly sweet and sour with an intense aroma.
Where do I come from?
The Physalis is native to the Andean region between Venezuela and Chile. At the beginning of the 19th century, it was introduced to the Cape of Good Hope, the promontory at the southern tip of Africa, and found great popularity there, hence the name. The main exporting countries for Europe are Colombia, South Africa, Ecuador and Madagascar. Physalis are available all year round.
The Physalis is rich in vitamin C, which is known as an essential nutrient in the diet. It also contains vitamin B1 and B6 as well as iron.
How to store me properly!
At approx. 10 to 15 degrees, the fruits will keep for several weeks in a dry and airy environment, as they are optimally protected by the shell. At room temperature, on the other hand, they will only keep for a few days.
Intended use
Physalis are also very suitable for freezing. Remove the Physalis from the shell, wash and eat raw. The small seed kernels can be eaten with it. Physalis are particularly tasty in fruit salads, desserts or as a cake topping. They are also often "chocolate-coated" and used in desserts.
