The pineapple originated in Brazil. The natives then took it to Central America, where Christopher Columbus received it as a welcome gift in 1493. He then brought it to Europe.
Why I'm a good choice
Pineapple is low in calories but rich in potassium. The fruit also contains plenty of vitamin C, manganese, iron, copper and zinc.
How to store me properly!
Pineapples are best stored at room temperature. Peeled and cut in the refrigerator. A ripe pineapple should be consumed quickly. Frozen, it will keep for a few months.
How to tell if I'm ripe!
Pulling on the leaves of the stalk is one way to test the ripeness of the fruit. If they are no longer quite so firmly attached to the crown, the pineapple has reached optimum ripeness.
Intended use
First cut off the stem base and the crown with the leaves. In an upright position, you can cut the peel as close to the surface as possible. The pulp can be cut into either slices or quarters. Pineapple goes particularly well in desserts, cakes or with poultry.
