Ingredients
- 3 medium potatoes (waxy)
- ½ small onion
- 1 egg
- 2 tbsp wheat flour
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 pinch ground pepper
- 3 tbsp sunflower oil
Preparation
- 1Peel the potatoes and grate them on a coarse grater. Place the grated potatoes in a clean kitchen towel and squeeze firmly to remove as much liquid as possible. This is important for the hash browns to become properly crispy later.
- 2Mix the grated potatoes in a bowl with the finely diced onion. Add the egg and flour for better binding. Season with salt and pepper.
- 3Heat plenty of sunflower oil in a pan over medium to high heat. Form small patties from the mixture (about 2-3 tablespoons per piece) and place them in the hot oil.
- 4Fry the hash browns for about 3-4 minutes on each side until golden brown and crispy. Then drain them on paper towels to remove excess oil.
- 5Serve hot, for example as a breakfast side dish or plain with your favorite dip. Tip: For a lower-fat version, the hash browns can also be baked in the oven at 200°C for about 20-25 minutes on baking paper.
